Bladder Infections (UTI) in Stressed, Indoor Cats: Part 2
If your cat has a urinary infection, what will you notice?
- increased urinary frequency
- straining to urinate indicating pain (dysuria)
- urinating frequently in small amounts (pollakiuria)
- urgency
- blood in urine (hematuria)
- unusually smelly urine
- urinating outside the litter box
If your cat has any of these symptoms, visit a veterinarian to have your cat’s urine tested to identify whether there are bacteria, urinary stones, or other problems causing the symptoms. If no physical problems are identified, your veterinarian may suggest the following :
- Increase fluids by using canned or home-cooked foods.
- Increase the number of litter boxes so your cat can reach one quickly.
- Relieve stress and anxiety with the calming pheromone, Feliway.
- Relieve stress by putting flower essense in the water or your cat’s mouth.
- Address any gastrointestinal problems, especially food allergies which can cause diarrhea and irritable, crampy bowels. Use probiotics to populate your cat’s intestine with healthy bacteria.
- Provide Omega 3 fatty acids encourage a normal immune response.
